Enterprise Studies

This is a flexible programme delivered over 1 or 2 terms, featuring 2 modules: ‘Thinking Big’ and ‘Market Day’. For ‘Thinking Big’, students examine NZ entrepreneurs. Students also look at the personality traits they’d need to be successful. In the ‘Market Day’ module, teams of students create a product or service to be sold at a market.


Student learning

Through Enterprise Studies, students will

  • Identify traits common among entrepreneurs
  • Learn how to think creatively to add value to products
  • Work in teams to create and promote a product
  • Understand the importance of keeping accurate financial records

Curriculum links

Enterprise Studies suits the Social Sciences learning area, particularly the ‘Economic World’ and ‘Identity, Culture and Organisation’ strands. The programme can be included in a full-year Social Studies course, or run as a separate course over 1 or 2 terms. It can also be integrated into other subject areas including Technology, Business and Commerce.

1. Market Day: Setting the scene

Students taking part will:

  • Work creatively in groups to design and produce a fashion garment from toilet paper
  • Examine personality types
  • Learn about adding value to an existing product
  • Brainstorm product ideas within a set of parameters

Students taking part will:

  • Brainstorm ideas for a product they can create
  • Source and manage their start-up capital
  • Purchase resources to produce their products
  • Conduct a SWOT analysis
  • Brainstorm ideas for marketing materials

Students taking part will:

  • Produce their products 
  • Prepare a financial plan

5. Thinking Big: Being Enterprising

Students taking part will:

  • Learn about the concept of enterprise and understand what being enterprising means
  • Evaluate their own enterprising characteristics

6. Thinking Big: Enterprising Businesses & People

Students taking part will:

  • Examine a range of case studies of enterprising people
  • Complete tasks for each case study to reflect their learning

7. Thinking Big: Creative Problem Solving

Students taking part will:

  • Learn about creative problem solving, including some New Zealanders who have created businesses with their solutions. 
  • Research two examples of creative problem solving

Students taking part will:

  • Research a business that they find inspiring
