PREP is a cross-curricular programme where Year 1-8 students design and operate their own functioning community. The programme can be run from 8 weeks to 1 year. It has strong links to the Social Sciences curriculum and allows students to engage in economic activity and contribute to their community. The programme culminates in a market day, with family and friends invited to take part.


Student learning

Through PREP, students:

  • Gain knowledge, skills and experiences in the Social Sciences Curriculum (Levels 1 - 4)
  • Learn about managing money, making decisions, production, earning income, spending, saving and governance
  • Learn how to participate and contribute to an economic activity and a community.

Curriculum links

PREP links student learning to the Economic World Strand of the Social Sciences Curriculum. It also links to the Curriculum Strands of Identity, Culture and Organisation, and Place and Environment. Students will apply skills from the English, Mathematics and Statistics and Technology Curriculums, develop the five key competencies and engage with the vision, principles and values of the New Zealand Curriculum.

Students taking part will:

10. Service ventures

Students taking part will:

11. Recording venture work

Students taking part will:

  • Keep accurate records of any decisions made about the venture. This would include any decisions about employment matters (such as contracts), products or services, designs, costings, production matters, marketing, finances and evaluation.

  • Create a business record (paper based or electronically) that tells the story of their venture.

12. Production and marketing

Students taking part will:

  • Learn about and practise their roles in the venture. 

  • Work in a team to plan, design, test, and manufacture a product.

  • Purchase raw materials to make their product from the school warehouse.

  • Display their product/service at a Trade Expo and collect feedback.

  • Create an advertising campaign.

13. Market day

Students taking part will:

  • Prepare market invitations for parents and caregivers (optional)
  • Prepare for the market day: organise stall display, signs, advertising, stall float, stall rosters, practice good customer service etc.
  • Sell their products at the Market Day.
  • Buy products from other ventures at the Market Day.
  • Complete all financial transactions (pay loans etc.)
  • Calculate profits.
  • Debrief and evaluate their work
