Twenty seven teams of four players braved heavy rain and winds at the charity event set up by Nelson College students at Nelson Golf Club on Friday, raising more than $6500.

Josh Simpson, one of the four students who organised the tournament, said a wave of heavy rain at about 4 o'clock brought the proceedings to a temporary halt.

"Some carried on, some didn't. It was a shame about the weather, but all in all, to raise $6500 we look on it as a good day."

They almost had to cancel the tournament with only 10 teams signed up in the week before it was due to take place, Simpson said.

He spent several months setting up the fundraiser with fellow students Matthew Grimes, Fergus Murray and Harry Perkins as part of their business studies, and they planned to run the event again next year.

"It makes us want to do it even better next year, and raise even more money," Simpson said.

The group will use the event to enter into the social enterprise awards run by the Lion Foundation young enterprise scheme.

All Proceeds of this year's tournament would go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Figures from the foundation show one in eight Kiwi men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime, with one man diagnosed every three hours and one or more dying every day.

It's urging men to proactively ask their GP for a prostate check.
