Winner of the YES chief executive of the year for 2018, Nitha Vashti, was back in Gisborne and happy to share some advice with the group.

The team are preparing a 10-page review of their business Monthly, which delivers boxes of organic sanitary products and educational information.

“We are targeting girls who don’t have much information and are maybe a bit embarrassed to ask for or even buy sanitary products,” said Eden Tata.

“At the moment we are pricing different delivery methods and looking at various courier companies.”

Nitha was the chief executive of Project Ataahua — a Gisborne Girls’ High YES company which commissioned public artworks to beautify Gisborne city.

Her team won company of the year at the regional finals in Gisborne last year and Nitha was named chief executive of the year nationwide.

Project Ataahua won a national excellence award for arts and culture at the 2017 YES awards.

Nitha is doing a business degree at Massey University in Wellington and was back in town on a mid-semester break.

University was definitely a step up in terms of having to be autonomous and motivated to get the work done, she said.

“One of the teachers here warned us that it was going to be different and said we were spoon-fed at school, but I didn’t really appreciate how true that was,” she said.

The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme is a business experience programme where high school students run a real business.

It is focussed on creating a more prosperous New Zealand through enterprise,and works with schools across the country to help students learn about business and entrepreneurship.

This is the fifth year Gisborne Chamber of Commerce has run the Young Enterprise Scheme here with support from Eastland Community Trust.
