She will be part of a group of 10 high school students who will travel to Singapore in the school holidays to do a business study tour, thanks to the Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPE), YES and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Singapore.

The aim of the tour is to expose young Kiwis to the opportunities awaiting them outside of school and in the hub of businesses in Asia.

“I am so excited to go to Singapore and to experience a country that is heavily multi-cultural,” she says.

“Gisborne’s tallest building is five storeys so I feel so honoured to have the opportunity to visit such a large, business-focused country.

She is looking forward to visiting businesses and learning how an international market impacts on them.

“Next year I want to go forward into the business sector and this trip will allow me to view business on an international scale.”

Nitha had to submit a video about why she wanted to go to Singapore in order to be chosen for the trip.

“I believe that I was probably chosen due to the success of our company, Project Ataahua, in winning the assignment art and culture award last year.”

This is the first of at least three trips through the Young Enterprise Scheme this year.

The students will learn about the culture and business community in Singapore, including site visits to established companies and start-ups.

They will meet local entrepreneurs, as well as those involved in some of NZ’s trade relationships, and work with Singaporean students on a thought-provoking business challenge.

The Southeast Asia CAPE was set up by the New Zealand Government to enhance the country’s engagement with the Southeast Asia region.

It works with New Zealand businesses, young people, the Government and other agencies to improve understanding of these countries and build knowledge of their economies, cultures and business protocols.

The Southeast Asia CAPE is hosted by Victoria University of Wellington.
