But one group of teenagers has changed that by creating a "party in a box".

The group, from Pinehurst School on Auckland's North Shore, developed their idea as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme, which sees students from around the country create a business.

Team member Mackenzie Cooper, 16, said the group wanted to make throwing a party easier and they all love children.

"My own parents have done birthday parties and we know how much work went into them," Mackenzie said.

The "pop-up party" boxes would be delivered to the recipient roughly two weeks before the party and a cake would be delivered on the day.

The boxes contained goody bags, cups and plates, invitations and themed activities and menus. The menu also came with a shopping list.

There were three theme options, including under-the-sea, pirates and fairies.

Mikayla said their idea was like putting a party planner in a box but it was less intrusive than having a planner organise it all.
