ZURU Internship - Kevin Li

So, when the opportunity of interning at one of the fastest growing toy companies in the world came around, I submitted my application video, not expecting much.

To my surprise, I ended up being one of the applicants shortlisted for an interview with ZURU, and a few weeks later, I was told that I had got the job.

A few weeks in now, the internship at ZURU has been both enjoyable and at times challenging. However, a day at the office never really feels like a day of laboursome work; the culture at ZURU is what makes working here different to most other offices. Imagine what the atmosphere would be like if you had a about a dozen millennials who are as equally as easy-going as they are hard-working. What ties everyone together is their enjoyment of their job and their drive and passion in disrupting the FMCG landscape.

So far, I’ve been able to do work across a range of areas at ZURU, from building the identity of one of our future brands and social media marketing to sales and legality research. I have been able to learn various skills that are applicable in the business world, while gaining an understanding of how one of the biggest companies to come out of New Zealand operates and grows. I’ve also been able to gain skills in managing and prioritising my own work, and taking initiative, which are all valued at ZURU.

To be able to get an internship straight out of high school is not an opportunity that many people get, and so I am incredibly grateful to the team at Young Enterprise and ZURU for making this happen. This internship has helped me realise how there will always be positives that can be taken out of going after any opportunities, and how they can set myself up for more opportunities in the future. It’s also further emphasised to me the need to try new things, meet new people and put myself in positions I’ve never been before, as there’s often little to lose and it can be the best way to learn and grow.
